• BDHSS jurisdiction covers an area of 175,000 square kilometers
• No community served by the BDHSS is accessible by road 100% of the time
• Ground permanently frozen, but thaws to varying degrees - from a few inches to a few feet
• Going north the boreal forest dwindles into treeless tundra
• Countless migratory birds and waterfowl during summer months
• Abundance of caribou
• Musk Oxen and Polar Bears in the northern regions
• Arrays of small and large mammals wander freely
