Regional Services

The following services are provided to both the town of Inuvik as well as to the other seven communities in the Beaufort-Delta region:

Community Counselling

The Community Counselling Program focuses on prevention, healing and treatment. It is a comprehensive program that provides support to the residents in each community. Services are provided by community wellness workers and mental health and addictions counselors.

  • Referrals to resources
  • Supportive counselling
  • Crisis intervention

Regional Support Services

Within the Authority there are Regional Mental Health and Addictions positions that provide leadership, program development, support and supervision to the Community Wellness Workers and Mental Health and Addictions Counselors. These include:

Continuing Care Services

Continuing Care Services support clients and their family caregivers when they cannot fully take care of themselves. There are three main types of services:

Home and Community Care - includes respite care, chronic care, foot care, palliative care, social support, equipment loans and Meals-on-Wheels;

Supported Living - includes Seniors' independent living with supports, supportive living with day programs, and 24-hour care in a group home;

Facility Living - includes long-term and extended care support for people who can no longer live in their home.

Dental Therapy

The goal of the Dental Therapy Program is to reduce tooth decay in the region, particularly among pre-school and school-age children. The Supervisor of Regional Dental Programs, a dental therapist, is responsible for dental education and health promotion in the communities.

Goals of the Dental Therapy Program:

  • Remain active in the schools and to engage teachers and parents
  • Encourage the reduction of sugary/junk foods
  • Seek partnerships with other departments to support a team-based approach to education and prevention (e.g. Work with pre/postnatal caregivers to provide education on Baby Bottle Tooth Decay)
  • Promote the philosophy that fillings and extractions are not the solution - prevention is

Diabetes Education

The Diabetes Nurse Educator, whose office is in the Inuvik Regional Hospital, works in collaboration with physicians, the regional nutritionist and allied health care professionals to deliver diabetes education, care and treatment.

Health Promotion

Health promotion and disease prevention activities and projects, in partnership with other territorial, regional and local organizations, raise awareness of and provide education about public health concerns.

Promotion and prevention programs and services are provided at the community level through health centres and public health units as well as non-government organizations.

Community Health Representatives (CHRs) within the communities work with others to plan and implement activities that promote healthy lifestyle choices.

Nutrition

Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP)

The CPNP Nutritionist, whose office is located in Inuvik, works in collaboration with CPNP workers in surrounding communities to ensure high quality prenatal nutrition services are available to pregnant women throughout the region.

Regional Nutrition Program

In collaboration with physicians, diabetes nurse educator, and allied health care professionals, the regional nutritionist provides a full range of nutrition services that promote healthy eating and active living. Services include assessment, counselling, and educational sessions that promote healthy eating and active living.

Rehabilitation Services

The Rehabilitation Services department, located in the Inuvik Regional Hospital, is comprised of a supervisor, physiotherapist, rehabilitation aide, rehabilitation assistant, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, and a speech language pathology assistant.

The rehab teams works with other health care providers to help people of all ages improve and maintain their independence from injury, disability or chronic disease. Physicians or community health nurses refer clients to Rehabilitation Services.

Social Service Programs

The Social Services Department provides community-based services to identified groups, individuals and families to protect and improve the social well-being and functioning of people within the community.

Telehealth

NWT Telehealth began as a pilot project in 1998 with clinical services available through Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife. Three communities in our region, Inuvik, Ulukhaktok and Tuktoyaktuk have access to telehealth services.

Services include consultation between a patient who is located in a remote community and a doctor in Inuvik, or a specialist located in Edmonton or Yellowknife, as well as education sessions for staff.

Telehealth has given us the ability to bridge geographical distances, improving the access to and delivery of health and social services, as well as health education to the people of the north.
