History

Prior to becoming a Board, the organization was operated by the Government of Canada. In 1988 responsibility for health and social services was transferred to the Government of the Northwest Territories. The Department of Health and Social Services is responsible for administering 28 pieces of territorial legislation.

Name Changes

  • 1988 - Inuvik Regional Health Board
  • 1997 - Inuvik Regional Health and Social Services Board
  • 2002 - Inuvik Regional Health and Social Services Authority
  • 2005 - Beaufort-Delta Health and Social Services Authority

Hospital History

  • January 13, 1961 - Inuvik General Hospital opened its doors and became the only Canadian hospital north of the Arctic Circle, the name later changed to the Inuvik Regional Hospital
  • April 27, 2003 - services began out of the new Inuvik Regional Hospital facility
